Types of Homeowners Coverage

well maintained southwestern home

Dwelling
Dwelling coverage applies to your private living space—the house you own or are making mortgage payments on that provides the roof over your head! It also covers any building structures that are attached to it, as well as:

  • Outdoor equipment permanently attached to your home
  • Heating and cooling systems
  • Water heaters
  • Water softeners
  • Working outdoor antennas or reception dishes

Other Structures
Other structures coverage applies to structures that are on your property, but not attached to your dwelling, like fences or sheds.

Personal Property
Personal property coverage applies to what's inside—the contents of your home and other structures. This coverage even extends to property you own somewhere other than where you live–like a vacation home–but there are reduced limits.

We realize that some of your personal property is unique and valuable, such as:

  • Money-related items like coin collections, bullion, bank notes and medals
  • Securities, stamps, tickets and deeds
  • Jewelry, watches and furs
  • Gold (with special limitations)
  • Silverware and gold ware (if stolen)

AmShield provides special coverage limits for items like these. If additional coverage is needed, it may be offered through an endorsement.

Additional Living Expenses
If your home is damaged due to a covered loss and you have to live elsewhere temporarily, we will reimburse you for the increased cost of living away from home while repairs are being made. In addition, if you rent out a part of your house that becomes unlivable, we will reimburse you for the lost rental income until the property is restored to a livable state.

Personal Liability
If someone is injured on your property, our liability coverage will help you pay for the damage you may be legally liable for, whether it's bodily injury or property damage. Classic examples are if your child breaks a neighbor's window while playing baseball or if a visitor falls because of ice on your driveway. Personal liability can help you fix that window or pay for your guest's broken wrist.

Family Liability
The liability coverage your home insurance policy provides applies to you and extends to any family members who live with you.

Medical Payments
Similar to personal liability coverage, medical payments coverage will help you pay for reasonable medical payments if someone is accidentally hurt or injured on your property and the injuries are caused by you or a family member living in your household.

Debris Removal and Emergency Removal of Property
Trees down after a storm? Burned wood and other materials after a fire or storm littering your property? Our debris removal coverage pays for reasonable expenses to remove debris after a covered loss occurs. If you're trying to remove property in an emergency, it may get damaged in the rush. Emergency removal of property coverage pays for damage to covered property.

Necessary Repairs after Loss
What if a tree falls on your roof during a storm? You may be able to remove it fairly quickly, but it might take a bit longer for a roofer to come out and fix the damage. In the meantime, it may be necessary to cover that part of the roof with a tarp or plywood to avoid leaks that could cause damage to your drywall. This is just one example of when this coverage is nice to have. It pays for any temporary repairs that may be necessary to protect covered property from additional damage after a loss.

Fire Department Charges
Sometimes fire departments charge if they are called to your property to put out a fire. This more commonly occurs in rural areas. Our coverage for fire department charges will reimburse you up to $500 to help offset those charges.

Credit Card Fraud and Check Forgery
As the name implies, this coverage pays up to $500 for any liability resulting if your credit cards are stolen or your checks are forged.

Additional Coverage Options
The following coverage options can be added to your home insurance policy:

  • Mobile home coverage
  • Additional premises
  • Earthquake damage
  • Damaged caused by a sewer or drain back-up
  • Claims brought against you for malicious prosecution and slander
  • Identity fraud
  • Liability protection for some private school, studio occupancies, or incidental and professional offices on premises
  • Home Daycare
  • A home under construction that you intend to reside in
  • Theft from a home under construction
  • Personal Property Replacement Cost coverage
  • Coverage for guns
