What to Do in a Heatwave
Reading Time:
Summer is approaching and the temps are rising. Do you know what to do if your area encounters a heatwave where the temps stay significantly above normal for days or weeks at a time? Keep cool, we have some tips to help you plan for even the hottest summer days.
Stay indoors. Try to stay indoors, especially during the heat of the day. If you don’t have air conditioning, check for cooling centers in your area.
Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day - most importantly water. Try to steer clear of caffeine and alcohol as they can lead to further dehydration.
Avoid strenuous activity and exercise. If the temps are hot, make it a rest day. Your workout can wait until a cooler day. If you must do something strenuous, like working outside, try to avoid the heat of the day and drink at least one quart of water per hour you’re out in the heat.
Dress light. Stick to lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
Be aware of heat illness. Watch for signs of heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. A heat stroke can be life threatening and requires immediate medical attention.
Check your back seat. Never leave a child or pet in a hot car for any amount of time.
Check on your family and friends. Give your friends, family and neighbors a call to make sure they are staying cool or to see if they need any help.
Check on your pets. Try to keep your pets inside. If it’s unavoidable, make sure they have plenty of water and a shady spot to take a break from the sun.
Prepare for power outages. High temps can lead to power system failures. Have an emergency kit, an emergency plan and even a backup power supply ready.
