Fence Damage - Is It Covered?
Reading Time:
Installing a fence can give you privacy from your neighbors and any street traffic that may be around you, as well as an enclosed, private space to host barbeques, space for your children or pets to play and just having a space to relax in peace. What you might not think about is what happens if your fence is damaged and if your insurance will cover the damages. After all, a fence can be a big investment, so it’s good to know what to expect in case something does happen.
Is My Fence Covered?
Homeowners insurance may help cover damage to your fence with the other structures coverage in your policy. Other structures apply to structures that are permanently attached to the premises, but not to your home such as fences and sheds.
What If a Storm Damages My Fence?
Wind, hail and lightning can all damage your fence if it is severe enough. Storm damage to your fence is typically covered under homeowners insurance. Check your policy’s dwelling limit on your other structures coverage is available – or ask your agent to let you know. If a storm damages your fence, take photos of the damage as soon as it is safe to go outside. This might help a claims adjuster in the investigation process.
What If a Tree Falls on My Fence?
Homeowners insurance can help cover the damage to your fence if a tree falls on it and causes damage. If your neighbor’s tree falls on your fence, then your neighbor’s insurance may pay for the damage if they were negligent. For example, if your neighbor ignored that their tree was decaying and overlooked basic maintenance, this could be considered negligence. Your insurance company may try to recover costs from your neighbor’s insurance provider.
When Is Fence Damage Not Covered
Fence damage is not covered under homeowners insurance if there is a flood or an earthquake. In those specific circumstances you can purchase separate insurance policies for floods and earthquakes.
